Prenatal acupuncture

Did you know Acupuncture can be a safe and effective therapy utilized for prenatal care?

In fact, many women begin acupuncture treatment prior to becoming pregnant to help promote fertility by increasing uterine blood flow while relieving stress and anxiety. When performed by a licensed practitioner, acupuncture before and during pregnancy is generally considered safe. Since there are several acupuncture points that are contraindicated during pregnancy, it is ideal to find an acupuncturist who is comfortable and experienced in treating pregnant women. And of course, prior to receiving acupuncture treatment, it is best to discuss with your health care provider or OBGYN any additional changes to prenatal health plans. Acupuncture has been successful in treating many common pregnancy complaints and conditions including but not limited to:

· Morning sickness and hyperemesis gravidarum

· Constipation

· Heartburn

· High Blood Pressure

· Stress and Anxiety

· Depression and Fatigue

· Back, Hip or Pelvic Pain

· Headaches and Migraines

· Hemorrhoids

· Breech position

· Delayed Labor

Acupuncture and moxibustion, which is the use of heat therapy on the acupuncture point BL 67, has also been found to be quite effective in helping to turn a breech positioned baby into the correct position. This combined treatment is most effective when used around 34 weeks but may still be done as late as 38 or 39 weeks. In doing so, this could possibly eliminate the need for a C-Section while preparing the body for labor and delivery.

Labor Induction Acupuncture is a gentle yet effective procedure to start labor and is typically performed between 39 and 42 weeks. It is often used as a last resort before medical induction is necessary. Acupuncture has been found to be safe and effective in labor preparation by easing labor pain and reducing the need for medications. Acupuncture works by helping the body release more endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain killers. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has approved the use of acupuncture during pregnancy to manage labor pain.
